The University of Michigan is one of the nation's great public institutions of higher education, and has for many years been a leader in genetics, genomics, and the mathematical sciences. Faculty members in the Departments of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Human Genetics, and Bioinformatics are involved in research and training in statistical, computational, and molecular genetics.
The dissertation proposal should be presented well before completion of the dissertation, so that the student may get feedback and comments from the dissertation committee, as well as review and approve the proposed direction and content of the research. Students are required to create a written document for the proposal and present orally to the dissertation committee.
Students are required to take their written qualifying exam (open book) to advance to candidacy at the end of the second year of the PhD program, generally in early June. Preparation for the qualifying exam builds on previously taken strategy classes. This involves significant additional reading beyond coursework to add depth of understanding in the main research areas of strategy.
